Is the world rushing towards an inescapable apocalypse? It is beyond question that we are witnessing amazing and peculiar signs appearing in the heavens with increasing frequency—signs in the sun, moon, and stars. Are these celestial signs a message from God that the end is near? Let’s explore some of these signs and consider whether they point to an approaching period of great tribulation and the return of Jesus Christ. If so, then the four horsemen of the apocalypse are about to begin their ride and our time may be up to ensure we are not only physically prepared but—more importantly—spiritually prepared!
It is important to understand that God’s beloved people—the Jews—seek after signs. In fact, they require signs from God in order to believe and trust Him (1 Corinthians 1:22). As such, God—throughout history—has provided Israel with amazing signs.
In this article, we are going to explore a number of potential heavenly signs that have appeared recently, including:
- The 2017 and 2024 Solar Eclipses
- The January 2019 and May 2021 Super Blood Wolf Moons
- The Recent Blood Moon Tetrads
On the other hand, Christians don’t need a sign—we’re studying and following God’s Word. We live by faith and not sight (signs).
However, this doesn’t mean that we can’t benefit from God’s signs to Israel! To the contrary, we (and the entire world) can and should seek to recognize, appreciate, and rejoice in God’s signs to Israel—they can even serve as a blessing and enable us to discern additional insight into the timing of God’s unfolding prophetic plan for Israel and the world.
In other words, when God speaks to Israel, we would all be wise to listen as well!
Are these recent heavenly events signs from God to Israel?
Is God declaring to the Israelites, “Get prepared my people because I am getting ready to start dealing with you again shortly!”?
Is this His way of saying, “I haven’t forgotten you—I remember my unconditional promises to you and I’m getting ready to fulfill them in a mighty way!”?
If so, then our time has literally run out to get prepared—physically and spiritually!
Let’s get into this and see what we can discover about these heavenly signs…
Does God Use Signs in the Sun, Moon & Stars?
First, we need to address the question of whether God uses signs in the sun, moon and stars. If he doesn’t, then it’s all a moot point.
Thankfully, God’s Word provides us with the answer.
From the very beginning, God declared that He created celestial bodies for—among many purposes—signs: “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years” (Genesis 1:14)
The prophet Joel wrote of the last days and the return of Christ:
“And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.” (Joel 2:30-21)
The Apostle Peter even quoted this very prophecy during his ministry (Acts 2:19-20).
God has also declared through His prophet Isaiah:
“Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.” (Isaiah 13:9-11)
And Jesus Christ Himself revealed, “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars” in the days leading up to my return (Luke 21:25).
Clearly, God has declared the end from the beginning (cf. Isaiah 46:9-10) and created the universe in such a way that the sun, moon and stars provide signs to not only confirm His Word but to also serve as markers of His actions and warnings regarding coming judgments.
However, we must be careful about how we approach the heavens. God also warns:
“Be careful not to lift up your eyes toward heaven and see the sun and moon and stars, all the things of heaven, and be pulled away and worship them and serve them” (Deuteronomy 4:19).
As King David declared, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his handywork” (Psalm 19:1). The celestial bodies were created by God to glorify Him… not to be glorified or worshipped themselves. We worship the Creator… not the creation.
Furthermore, David revealed that he was an astronomer at heart:
“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained” (Psalm 8:3).
David looked at the heavens and considered them—he sought to understand and appreciate them.
Thus, the bible teaches that astronomy (seeking to understand God’s heavenly creation) is good; however, astrology (believing celestial bodies influence human affairs and the natural world) is evil.
Stated differently, astrology is all about self—or “me.” What can the stars tell me or do for me in my life?
Astronomy is all about God—the heavens are a sign from Him that testifies to His greatness.
2017 & 2024 Solar Eclipses: God’s Judgment Coming for America?
The first sign I want to look at are two unique eclipses—one that occurred in 2017 and one that will occur in 2024.
Could these be signs from God? And, if so, what can they be telling us about our future and God’s prophetic plan?
August 2017 US Solar Eclipse
On August 21, 2017, a very unique eclipse crossed the United States.
First, it was unique in that it was the first eclipse with a path of totality crossing the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of the U.S. since 1918. Even more interestingly, 1918 marked an important year for Jews—it was a Jubilee year that was marked by the Balford Declaration, which set in motion the turning over of Palestine to the Jews.
Second, it was unique in that 2017 was itself a Jubilee year. Following 1918, the next Jubilee year was 1967—marked by the Six Day War, during which Israel took possession of Jerusalem. This is another critical prophetic event on God’s calendar.
Remember, we quoted Jesus’ words about signs in the last days above. Well, immediately before that, He spoke to the future destruction of Jerusalem (fulfilled in 70AD):
“And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled” (Luke 21:24).
It was then that Jesus transitioned to the time leading up to His return, declaring, “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars” (Luke 21:25).
So, we have Jerusalem reclaimed by Israel in the 1967 Jubilee year—indicating that the times of the Gentiles had been fulfilled and Christ’s return is forthcoming!
The next year of Jubilee was, you guessed it, 2017—the year this unique eclipse occurred. These are clearly important years in God’s prophetic plan for His chosen nation. Was this eclipse one of the signs Jesus spoke of?
Third, the 2017 event was unique in that the eclipse’s path of totality made landfall exclusively within the United States, making it the first such eclipse since the country’s declaration of independence in 1776. Wow, now that’s interesting as well. We witnessed a similar eclipse at the founding of our nation… and then not again until 2017.
The Prophet Isaiah wrote about the future destruction of the Daughter of Babylon:
“Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; Sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate” (Isaiah 47:1; cf. Revelation 18).
We discuss this complete passage in detail in our article Mystery Babylon—God’s Judgment on America Forthcoming?, where we make the case that it refers to America. What’s interesting here is that God indicates this nation once held a special place in His heart—He called her tender and delicate. Could the eclipse of 1776 have been a positive sign from God regarding His establishment of this nation?
Now, nearly 250 years later, could God be signaling His coming judgment upon a nation that has become exceedingly prideful and wholly wicked?
Coincidence? Or, could this be a divine sign in the heavens marking the beginning and the end of America?
Traditionally, Judaism views eclipses with a sense of foreboding. For example, Succah 29a of the Talmud speaks of a solar eclipse as being a bad omen for the entire world.
Rabbi Meir notes that the Talmud also discusses the differences between solar and lunar eclipses: “Our Rabbis taught, when the sun is in eclipse it is a bad omen for idolaters; when the moon is in eclipse, it is a bad omen for Israel, since Israel reckons by the moon and idolaters by the sun.”
We’ll look at some other signs that may point to coming judgement from God on America later in this article but, again, I encourage you to read our article Mystery Babylon—God’s Judgment on America Forthcoming? when you get a chance to learn more.
April 2014 US Solar Eclipse
If that wasn’t peculiar enough, this eclipse will be followed by another on April 8, 2024.
This total solar eclipse will be visible across North America and has been dubbed the Great American Total Solar Eclipse.
The really interesting thing is that the path of these two eclipses will form a cross (or “X”) in America.
Specifically, the path of the 2017 eclipse crosses with the path of the upcoming total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024, with the intersection of the two paths being in southern Illinois—in Makanda Township at Cedar Lake, just south of Carbondale.
Thus, America—and specifically those at “X” marks the spot—will experience two total solar eclipses within a span of less than seven years.
So, is there anything unique about where the paths cross?
It just so happens that the “X” falls on the New Madrid fault! Coincidence? Or, is God telling us something?
You know what else is interesting about this location?
It just so happens to occur precisely in what is known as Little Egypt! Seriously folks, you can’t make this stuff up.
Southern Illinois has been known as Little Egypt since as far back as 1799. If you want to learn more about this area, I recommend reading the informative article Illinois’ Little Egypt by the Mississippi Valley Traveler.
The “X” falls precisely on a fertile plain (referred to as Little Egypt) between the Mississippi River (where the Missouri River joins) on the west and the Ohio River on the east—above where the two meet to form the mighty Mississippi River (referred to as the Nile of America).
The resemblance between Little Egypt and the actual Nile delta in Egypt is stunning—including the city of Cairo (Egypt & Illinois) that sits at the meeting of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers… and Memphis (Egypt & Tennessee) that sits just downstream from Cairo!
American Earthquake to Be a Satanic Counterfeit?
Now, let’s explore something for just a moment. Let’s just hypothesize that:
- God is signaling a coming New Madrid earthquake, and
- The tribulation period is about to begin
We know that the Antichrist will commit the greatest of all blasphemies when, at the midpoint of the 7-year tribulation period, he will sit on the Mercy Seat—the very seat of God Almighty—and declare himself to be “god” in the rebuilt Third Temple in Jerusalem.
What happened two thousand years ago when Christ was crucified? At the moment of His death, the great veil in the Temple was torn from top to bottom and there was a massive earthquake:
“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.” (Matthew 27:50-51)
Now, we know that Satan—the father of lies and master counterfeiter—always attempts to copy everything that God does. So, when the Antichrist (whom he will indwell at that point) declares himself to be god in the Temple, it is certainly within the realm of possibility that there may be an earthquake at the same time—either generated by him or by God in wrath and judgment of the act.
If that occurs at the midpoint of the seven years (based on a Jewish lunar calendar), could that be manifested in a major earthquake along the New Madrid fault?
And, if God is foretelling of this earthquake, what would that mean for a starting date of the tribulation period?
If we subtract 1260 days (or 42 months or 3.5 years) from April 8th, 2024, we arrive at a date of Monday, October 26, 2020. And if that potentially marks the start of the tribulation period, then we know the rapture must happen before that.
Now, this is speculation, but it is certainly interesting none the less.
Christ’s return is very close… but it just might be far closer than many could possibly imagine.
The Super Blood Wolf Moon—Sign of Impending Judgement & Return of Christ?
Another heavenly sign—and I mean there have been so many recently—is the super blood wolf moon that occurred on January 20, 2019 (or January 21 GMT) and was only visible in the US.
A super blood wolf moon is: (1) the first full moon in January, (2) a full moon occurring when the distance between the Earth and Moon is as short as possible, and (3) a lunar eclipse—all happening at the same time.
Senior Jewish rabbis have interpreted this sign as indicating impending judgment on America, and the world.
For example, Rabbi Yekutiel Fish also wrote that the January 20 super blood moon, which marked the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat, was not merely an astronomical event but rather a sign from God to Jews in America (where it was visible):
“The lunar eclipse over North America bears a message for the US and the Jews. It clearly is telling the Jews that they need to come to Israel.”
He added that Western nations were about to experience a very challenging era, where there will be “great tragedies that will bring down governments and (create) great human suffering.”
Rabbi Fish has suggested that both President Trump and former President Obama have “caused massive shocks which will prepare the stage for the coming of the messiah to the people of Israel, who will redeem the whole world.”
Again, this is being interpreted from a Jewish perspective (to whom God provides signs) as a sign of (1) imminent judgment by God on America and (2) the soon return of the Jewish Messiah.
To learn more about other rabbinical signs and prophecies, I encourage you to read our article Signs & Prophecies Emerging from Israel—Last Chance to Get Prepared?
Even more interesting, there won’t be another total lunar eclipse until May 2021. That falls on the 80th anniversary of the birth of Israel (May 14, 1948)—the length of a biblical generation and the fulfilment of the Fig Tree generation Jesus spoke of. To learn more about this, you should definitely read our article Daniel’s 70th Week & Fig Tree Generation—Is Our Time Running Out?
Again, it would appear God is displaying a plethora of heavenly signs—signs pointing to a period of great tribulation (including potential judgment on America) and the return of Christ to establish His earthly kingdom.
Blood Moon Tetrads—Signs from God?
But it gets even crazier… there have been some highly unusual blood moon tetrads (four sequential lunar eclipses with no partial eclipses in between).
Most recently, a blood moon tetrad occurred in 2014 to 2015 and coincided with Pesach (Passover) and Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles).
The lunar eclipses in 2014 fell on April 15, the first night of Pesach, and October 8, the first night of Sukkot. Those in 2015 fell on April 4 (second night of Pesach) and September 28 (second night of Sukkot). Each lunar eclipse was separated by six lunar months.
A blood moon tetrad has occurred on the Jewish holy days of Passover and Sukkot only seven times. If we look at the last three times, we see some familiar dates yet again:
- A Blood Moon Tetrad occurred between 1493 and 1494 immediately following the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492.
- A Blood Moon Tetrad occurred between 1949 and 1950 on Passover, coming right after the 1948 rebirth of an independent Jewish state.
- A Blood Moon Tetrad occurred between 1967 and 1968, following the 1967 Six Day War, during which Israel liberated the entire city of Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount where the First and Second Temples once stood.
You can’t make this up! Just coincidence? You should be beginning to doubt that!
Yori Yanover wrote about the significance of these last three occurrences:
“It’s also interesting to note that those moon strings each appeared only after the miraculous events, like a kind of confirmation on the part of God: I did this. Which means the coming year or so should be very eventful.”
And then there is the matter of Shemitah years.
In Leviticus chapter 25 God commands his people to not plant the fields on the seventh year. This is to be a Sabbath Year to rest and honor God. Much like the broader Jubilee years, when we look at the last seven Shemitah years, we find some interesting events related to America:
|1972-1973||World Trade Center completed—a symbol of American economic superiority|
|1979-1980||US Supreme Court bans the posting of the Ten Commandments in public schools|
|1986-1987||Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, Whittier Narrows earthquake in Los Angeles, Black Monday (crash) in stock market|
|1993-1994||World Trade Center bombing, Northridge earthquake near Los Angeles|
|2000-2001||World Trade Centers destroyed on 9/11, massive stock market crash, UN Millennium Declaration made in New York City, Nisqually earthquake Puget Sound area of Washington|
|2007-2008||Virginia Tech massacre, stock market Crash|
|2014-2015||Blood Moon Tetrad, Napa earthquake|
Clearly, this is another series of years that is incorporated in God’s prophetic timetable—not just in terms of Israel but also, to some degree, with events in America.
Looking at blood moon tetrads, we also find that:
- A tetrad of four blood moons all occurring on Jewish feast days has only happened nine times since Christ.
- A tetrad of blood moons has occurred in Shemitah Years only 10 times since Christ.
However, we find that only once—1 single time—since Christ has a tetrad of blood moons occurred that fulfilled both parameters. When was it? The 2014-2015 blood moon tetrad.
Coincidence? Or, are we building towards a major move by God—for Israel, America, and the world?
We do not—as do the astrologers—seek to interpret the heavens in order to find meaning and direction in life. Rather, we study and interpret (i.e., “rightly divide” 2 Timothy 2:15) the Word of God. However, God had made it clear that He provides signs in the heavens to point to, mark, highlight, and/or confirm His Word and deeds to His people—the Jews—and, secondarily, to the whole world.
In other words, God provides heavenly signs to declare to Israel and the world that He is the Great “I Am” and the Alpha and Omega.
Do the American eclipses of 2017 and 2024; the American super blood wolf moon of 2019 and 2021; and the blood moon tetrad of 2014-2015 point towards an imminent rapture of the church, an apocalyptic judgment on America, the beginning of the Tribulation period, and the soon return of Christ to establish His earthly 1,000-year kingdom on earth?
That is a question we must all study and answer for ourselves.
I believe by faith that Scripture unambiguously communicates to us that we are living in the last of the last days and, as such, we are on the very threshold of all these things coming to pass. As such, I believe God is providing confirmatory signs in the heavens—signs He built into the very structure of our universe from the moment of creation and beginning of time.
In a way, God is broadcasting a warning at the top of His proverbial lungs to all who will listen: “I have declared the end from the beginning in My Word—the time is at hand… believe it!”
Again, do I build my end-times doctrine upon a foundation of heavenly signs? Absolutely not!
God’s Word provides everything one needs to know in order to discern the times and live accordingly. However, we are witnessing an astonishing body of signs all around us that—in their totality—absolutely confirm where we are in God’s prophetic timetable.
How about you?
If Christ returns today to rapture His church, will you be on the Ark?
When we see God begin to provide signs to and move His hand on Israel once again, then that should be a strong indication that we are at the end of God’s redemptive program! Whether it happens today, next month, or next year… we know that it is (1) absolutely going to happen and (2) going to happen very, very soon may friend—much sooner than you may imagine.
Don’t miss your opportunity to be on the Ark that is Jesus Christ. Understand the signs and the times.
Don’t wait for the last minute. Don’t wait for the rains to begin pouring down. It will be too late. The doors to the Ark will have been shut—just as they were on the ark in the days of Noah.
It’s time to have your real “come to Jesus” moment… right now. You may not have any more time.
Salvation is not complicated. The Apostle Paul makes it very clear what is required for you and I to receive eternal life and be on the one true Ark that is Jesus Christ:
“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
Again, salvation is not complicated… but it only comes one way: through faith alone, in Christ alone, by grace alone:
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins… But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:1, 4-9)
I don’t know how to perfectly interpret these signs from God—none of us do. Thankfully, I don’t need to rely on signs. Rather, I walk by faith—standing on and holding fast to the gospel of Christ. And so can you my friend.
I can’t tell you exactly what these signs mean. However, I do know that they—in their totality and when combined with so many other signs—confirm what the Word of God is declaring to us: We are in the last days and very, very close to the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I urge you to be like King David and consider the heavens. Let God speak to your heart. Place your faith in Christ and come aboard the Ark before the tribulation period begins and it’s too late!
